Final 4 MKB MVM VESZPREM Powerhouse in Europe, powerhouse in SEHA GSS League
VELUX EHF Champions League’s fourth positioned team from season 2013/14, Hungarian MKB MVM Veszprem have without doubt brought quality to SEHA GSS League despite of the fact this is their premier season in the competition. One of the strongest European teams which surely has reason not only to hope reach CL’s Final Four in Cologne but also to fight for the trophy has this season showed class and consistency in regional competition reaching 17 wins from 18 matches losing only against Vardar in Skopje. That match was however only a part of these two clubs’ rivalry - they have this season met four times, twice in CL and twice in SEHA GSS League with another clash possibly ahead of them , in Veszprem Arena next week.
Ortega’s team has from the beginning showed who they are beating Vojvodina in Novi Sad in their SEHA premier with 32:19 and finishing the regular part of the season with 8 matches won by 10 or more goals which says much of their domination.
Ilić, Nagy, Zeitz, Alilović, Sulić and the other top quality players have easily outplayed all rivals in front of their frenetic fans at Veszprem Arena. They were better than Vardar Skopje 31:23, Metalurg Skopje 33:21, Meshkov Brest 31:26 and PPD Zagreb 27:22 - all of their main rivals.
Most difficult job were away matches against Tatran (32:29) and PPD Zagreb (24:21) but hosts were not able to keep up with the pace and finish the match celebrating. Their only defeat has happened after they have already secured first place after the regular part of the season, in Skopje against Vardar 28:21.
Numbers which much of their overall performance are - most scored goals (561, more than 31 per match) and strongest defence (413 goal against them, less than 23 per match).
Team’s top scorer so far is Serbian national team captain Momir Ilić with 81 goals who was also best CL’s scorer last season. Slovenian winger Gašper Marguč follows with 75 goals, Croatian pivot Renato Sulić netter 55. Remarkable goalkeepers Roland Mikler and Mirko Alilović have also proved their status with Mikler finishing the regualr part of the season as the best goalkeeper with more than 41% of saves.
Hungarian team is well-balanced with two quality players on each position which is giving them right to enter the Final tournament as main favorites. It is however sure that Spanish coach and his players will have to prove their quality once again in the most important part of the season.
