Meet the team – Vardar 1961
Macedonian Vardar 1961 is one of only four teams that have been a part of the SEHA –Gazprom League since its very beginning in 2011. Each and every season, the goal of the ‘Red&Black’ team is to go all the way and this season will be no different.
Team went through a lot of changes comparing to the last season. Coach Stevce Alushovski was replaced by the famous Veselin Vujovic in what was his third coaching appearance on Vardar’s bench. However, club and Vujovic parted way at the end of last year with Spaniard David Davis taking over as head coach. Fans will be happy to see Davis back after he, as an assistant coach, helped Vardar win their first historical EHF Champions League trophy. After that Davis also led Vardar’s women team helping them reach EHF Champions League Final 4 as well.
Roster didn’t survive the summer intact either. Experienced Borko Ristovski received help for taking care of the job between posts from national team goalie Martin Tomovski, Ali Safar from Kuwait and young Vasil Gogov. On the far left we’ll once again watch the ‘Flying Russian’ Timur Dibirov and Polish international Jan Czuwara who will play his rookie SEHA season. On the right Goce Georgievski, Darko Djukic and young and promising Alen Kjosevski. Line is looking stacked with captain Stojance Stoilov, Patryk Walczak and French international Jeremy Toto as well as young Stefan Atanasovski. Orchestrating the team will be Croatian national team player Ante Gadza along with Stefan Krstevski, Martin Karapalevski and Marko Mishevski. On the left back they lost Ante Kuduz but still have plenty to choose from with Bakari Diallo and Oliver Nyokas as well as Macedonian national team player Filip Taleski who is one of their best scorers of the season in all competitions so far. Oliver’s brother Kevin Nyokas will be taking care of the right back position along with Cuban international Cuni Morales and young David Savrevski.
Vardar once again have a solid team, a mix of both experience and potential as well as a whole lot of different playing styles with players from North Macedonia, Russia, Croatia, Serbia, Poland as well as France, Kuwait and Cuba. Ambitions for the season are to secure a place in EHF Champions League quarter-finals and go back to SEHA Final 4 as well as win the national ‘double crown’. In the first part of the season, they’ve showed that they are capable of achieving all this. If, after all these titles in the last years, anyone still needs any kind of confirmation.
